Mental Floss nominated for National Magazine Award

Mental Floss

Mental Floss is in the running for a National Magazine Award. The American Society of Magazine Editors released a list of nominees last week.

The Birmingham-based publication is competing in Special Interest Magazines against the Harvard Business Review, the Hollywood Reporter, Inc. and Texas Monthly. Mental Floss also earned a nomination in 2013 in the same category; Outside won that year.

Magazines in Birmingham have been finalists over the years, but none have taken home the Ellie.

Mental Floss publishes nine times a year offering a mix of facts and trivia with a humorous slant.

The National Magazine Awards take place Feb. 2 in New York.

Young Women’s Empowerment Conference wins cash award

Young Women's Empowerment Conference

The Young Women’s Empowerment Conference provides
teens with a free opportunity to meet and learn
from community leaders.

Media of Birmingham is pleased to award its remaining funds to the Young Women’s Empowerment Conference. This Birmingham-based nonprofit organization will receive a one-time gift of $797.30.

In looking for a local group that serves media professionals, Young Women’s Empowerment Conference stood out easily among applicants. Executive director Chianti Cleggett founded the organization in 2008.

The special giveaway was announced in October.

Conference marketing director Jessica Vance nominated her group. She said the mission is “to empower Birmingham-area girls to believe that their futures hold big things.”

The free event features Birmingham natives talking about overcoming great obstacles, starting their own businesses, financial knowledge and more. Those speakers include a professional working in journalism, advertising, marketing, public relations or new media.

She added that the organization holds monthly meetings for its teen ambassadors board.

The gift will help the Young Women’s Empowerment Conference continue to bring media leaders to their audience. The fourth annual edition takes place March 30.

Alabama Press Association names winners of 2010 Better Newspaper Contest

Birmingham Business Journal, Birmingham News, Shelby County Reporter win multiple awards

Alabama Press AssociationThe Alabama Press Association named its winners in the 2010 Better Newspaper Contest. The South Carolina Press Association judged 2,525 entries from 64 newspapers.

The Birmingham News and the Shelby County Reporter won for overall General Excellence in their respective divisions.

The awards ceremony takes place June 5 in Orange Beach.

Alabama Public Television wins My Source education award

Alabama Public Television won a $3,000 My Source Education Innovation Award from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting for “Flying Over Alabama: The Whooping Crane Story,” its online video on the migration of whooping cranes.

The award, one of 39 handed out in March in Washington to winning stations nationwide, recognizes public broadcasting stations that use pioneering approaches and emerging digital technologies to serve the educational needs of their communities on the air, online, at home and in the classroom.

Birmingham Parent magazine wins 11 Parenting Publications of America awards

Birmingham Parent magazine won 10 awards in the 2009 Parenting Publications of America Editorial and Design Competition, announced earlier this month.

“A clever concept, executed well. This is the sort of column that differentiates a publication and serves readers. Consumer-friendly reporting with verve.”

Birmingham radio stations swept 14 of the 16 awards in their category, nine won by WBHM (90.3 FM). Birmingham TV stations took home 13 awards, with Fox 6 winning six awards.

UAB professor Minabere Ibelema wins Sigma Delta Chi Award from SPJ

Minabere IbelemaMinabere Ibelema, associate professor of communication studies at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, won the Sigma Delta Chi Award for Research. He was the sole winner from Alabama and also serves as undergraduate journalism director.

He won the award from the Society of Professional Journalists for research on his book, “The African Press, Civic Cynicism, and Democracy.”

Addy award submissions due Jan. 6

The 52nd annual Addy Awards, recognizing the best among Birmingham’s advertising community, wants your entries.

The deadline is Jan. 6, just 3 weeks away. (Late entry deadline is Jan. 11.)

Entry fees range from $55 to $90. The entry drop-off location is Think Positive Advertising, 100 Grandview Pl., Ste. 110, Inverness [map].
