Love being your own boss but miss the watercooler?

Former News staffer-turned-freelance-writer Gigi Douban is starting a co-working group since, in her words, working from home can get pretty boring. Come on, who are you going to gossip about? The cat? So she’s inviting other freelancers — writers, photographers, Web developers, whatever — to pool the ol’ creative juices every now and then.

Join the group Coworking Birmingham (and the Media of Birmingham group too while you’re there) on Facebook. As soon as she gets some folks signed up, the group will plan its first co-working session. For more infomation, e-mail Gigi at gdouban@yahoo.com or message her on Facebook.

The Terminal is throwing a party and you’re invited

Join the staff of The Terminal on the top floor of the former Protective Life/Chamber of Commerce building (2027 1st Avenue North) on March 14 to enjoy a unique view of The Magic City. From 4:30-8:30 p.m., there will be food, an open bar, a door prize or two, samples of event sponsor Verizon Wireless’ newest equipment and, most importantly, a chance for the Terminal’s publisher/ME (and MOB member) Andre Natta to thank everyone for supporting the site during its first year.

Cost:

* $10/person if you just want to come on out and show some support
* $5/person if you currently subscribe to The Terminal’s newsletter, the express
* FREE if you bring a used cell phone to be donated to Verizon Wireless’ HopeLine® program

Freelance – Lipstick

From Tina Hatch:

I’m the editor of Lipstick magazine, a new magazine for Birmingham women age 30 to 50. Lipstick bills itself as “smart, fun and fearless,” and we’re looking for writers, artists and photographers who share those qualities (or at least aspire to them).

We’re looking for writers who can write features, profiles, short articles, etc. in a conversational tone. We assign 90 percent of our stories, but we also welcome queries. Artists are needed for cover art as well as for subjects of potential profiles. We like to profile at least one local artist per month.

We’re looking for freelancers, all experience levels. I don’t care as much about background as I do the ability to tell a great story, whether it’s through words or art. Interested parties can send clips or a link to their Web site.

Contact her at thatch@lipstickbhm.com.

December event: Holiday Cheer!

Someday soon, we all will be together
If the fates allow …

It’s our last gathering of the year! Join us at Matthew’s on Morris for drinks and holiday merriment. [map]

We’ll also be taking cash donations for care packages for our troops through the USO. Please share a bit of the holidays with our men and women overseas serving their country. It’s just $25 for a care package.

Each care package contains, at a minimum, one prepaid international phone card, sunscreen, snacks, playing cards, toiletries and other items requested by service members. Donations help purchase and ship these items.

Or donate now through the USO site: All donations are tax-deductible.

We’ll be there from 5:30 and 7:30 on Monday, Dec. 17. Anyone in media, advertising, PR and Web should stop by — please tell your colleagues, friends and enemies to join us. Complete details are available on the Evite.

Questions? Contact us or leave a comment.

P.S. Please join our free mailing list for all the updates straight to your In box.

P.P.S. Don’t forget to make your holiday donation!
