Pins and needs

Colin, Christina, Emily, James and Zak aren’t just MOBsters — they’re bowlers. They’re legendary, not for their prowess in the alley, but for their generous spirit.

They’re raising money for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Birmingham.

This team needs to raise $1,000 in the next two weeks to beat its total from 2006. You can help.

All of the money, 100 percent, goes to a terrific organization, one that pairs children with adult role models, people who make an immediate positive impact on young lives.

Our Bowl For Kids’ Sake team page will let you:

  • find out more about our efforts;
  • track our progress;
  • and donate!

Please give today! Thanks for your help.

U2 rocked the house, or at least, the WorkPlay this week for the MOB’s July event. About two dozen MOBsters mixed and mingled, while raising $127 for Big Brothers Big Sisters.

Matt and Misty won our door prize package for biggest contribution. Thanks to Big Brothers Big Sisters for donating items.

A special thanks to Bob Farley of f8 Photo and Mojo Denbow of Photo Mojo for these wonderful pics. Plus, here’s Mojo’s post on the event.

A ‘Terminal’ beginning

We are happy to offer this call to arms from MOB member Andre:

The Terminal is one of the newest online publications in Birmingham, serving as a hub for information about what’s going on in the region. We’re looking for some folks who wouldn’t mind writing a few sentences every now and then to help the cause of covering the city with a different sort of lens.

We’re meeting at 5:45 p.m. Thursday (July 19) at Speakeasy 1920, 1920 3rd Ave. North, to go over what’s currently needed. This includes helping us update our calendar and just writing, even if it’s short, about local events.

We’re new and we’re a little different, so if you don’t mind that, come on over on Thursday evening. If you’ve got questions or want to learn more, visit http://bhamterminal.com or contact Andre Natta by e-mail, andre@bhamterminal.com, or phone, 205.276.6585.

Why we don’t hold events at the Garage

The Garage Cafe asked the MOB to be its MySpace friend today, one of the few requests we’ve ever turned down …

Although we’re flattered you’ve requested us as a MySpace friend, we must decline for the following reason:

The last time Media of Birmingham had an event at the Garage in July 2005, three of our attendees were mugged at gunpoint just outside your entrance. Fortunately, none of them were physically injured.

This was not the first time our colleagues were robbed walking to or from the Garage.

Montgomery sends interns packing

Interns Lose Slots at Gannett Paper

The Gannett Co. newspaper in Montgomery, Ala., was forced to make quick and drastic budget cuts last week, editor Wanda Lloyd told Journal-isms on Monday, leaving three interns suddenly without summer jobs. Similar cuts could be coming at other Gannett properties.

The displaced interns were instantly picked up by Schurz Communications, a South Bend, Ind., media company that owns 15 dailies and five weeklies. Charles V. Pittman, the company’s senior vice president-newspapers, had just addressed the interns Friday at the Freedom Forum’s Diversity Institute in Nashville, and said he could not let “these young people have their internship pulled out from under them.”

The three students will be going to the Herald Times in Bloomington, Ind. Schurz is taking a total of 13 interns, all of them trained in a joint multimedia program of Black College Wire and the Diversity Institute.

“I would not have done this if I had any other choice,” Lloyd, editor of the Montgomery Advertiser, told Journal-isms. She said that after a recent meeting of Gannett publishers, she was told by her publisher, Scott Brown, that the newspaper would be asked to take a look at possible cuts for the rest of 2007. She was on vacation last week attending a high-school reunion.
