Transitioning From Your Day Job to Freelancing

Learn from fellow media professionals who left, voluntarily or involuntarily, their traditional day jobs and started their own businesses.

Atticus Rominger, Kate Darden, and Cary Estes join Andre Natta, moderator, to discuss how they successfully went from day jobs to being on their own. Bring your questions and notebooks–this is sure to generate a lot of useful information. (Also bring your appetite–lunch is included!)

Surviving the New Realities of the News Business

Open to everyone interested in the media business. Portion of proceeds go to BABJ Scholarship Fund. Sponsored by the Birmingham Association of Black Journalists.

With all the turmoil in the media, you need to know to survive?  This special half-day session gives you some answers.

It will take a hard look at what’s happening in the media business and why; offer advice from people who know on how to reinvent yourself; and give you practical tips on how to start your own business if you no longer want to work for a company that may be forced to lay you off.

In addition to getting the real deal from people who have been there, you’ll also get a chance to share best practices with each other.

Oct. 21 event bonuses

Bonus No. 1: For those interested in reading more about U.S. Rep. Davis, MOBster Atticus Rominger wrote the cover story for the current issue of Thicket magazine.

Thicket: You’ve been labeled a “bipartisan congressman,” as well as a member of a “new wave” of black politicians, is that accurate?

Artur Davis: I’m not big on labels.

Thicket: Why not?

AD: I don’t think they capture the complexity of the public debate.

Rep. Davis will be our keynote speaker Tuesday at the Redmont.

Bonus No. 2: You can register to vote! Empower Alabama will be at our event with all the paperwork you need to vote on Nov. 4. This will be your last opportunity to register (submission deadline is Oct. 24!), so why put it off any longer?

You register, they’ll take care of the rest. Oh, and then you show up on Nov. 4 to vote.
